If you haven't heard or read anything about the recent campus shooting in Oregon, then I suggest you lift up the rock you're living under and acknowledge the severity of the growing issue with gun control.
It seems as though each time I turn on the news I get to see some heartbreaking tragedy where numerous lives were lost, impacted, or both, due to an event where a shooting took place. These happenings should SCARE people, not motivate people to be the next person who strives for some claim to fame by killing others. When students and individuals of all ages alike begin to feel scared just to go to places they feel safe such as school, church, or even the grocery store, that's when you know we have a problem.
In the article below, candidate Ben Carson address the issue of gun control and posted an image of him holding a sign saying "I am a Christian" which went viral the same day. His stance on the issue of gun rights and regulations is one that I am sure most of us can agree with.
Do you agree that individuals should be allowed to carry their own concealed weapons either for their own protection or the protection of others when/if these situations continue to arise? Or do you disagree and feel like allowing more people to carry weapons will only result in more unnecessary shootings and bloodshed?

Brianna,
ReplyDeleteI could not agree with you more!
The day they allow concealed carry on KSU campus is the day I go some other place to complete my education. Since you posted this, we have had another school related shooting at the University of Texas. I lived in New York State 30 years ago when it was harder to get a concealed carry permit than the chances of being struck by lightening - you know what? We felt safer. Didn't realize what we had.
To clarify - it is Texas Southern University. I had flashbacks to almost 50 years ago and the UT clock tower massacre.
ReplyDeleteBrianna, thank you for the post. I always felt that the only people that should have weapons are the military and police. However, I do not think that will ever happen. Their needs to be additional gun laws added, however I do not feel that these people are buying them from gun shops.
ReplyDeleteBrianna,
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that you decided to tackle this subject as it is one that is highly controversial among many. While I realize that shooting like this have occurred, and will continue to occur, I do not feel as if we should be taking away the second amendment rights of any person. People should have the right to carry a concealed weapon. I know others will disagree with my stance, but in my personal opinion a country that takes away gun rights is a country that is no longer one protect its citizens.
Nice post!!
Ali :)
I completely agree with what you have stated hear. Gun control is a huge issue here in our nation and I cannot fully understand why so many Americans choose to ignore it. We are in great need of a gun law reform that will address this problems we are seeing with individuals having the right to own and carry weapons. I believe that if we truly take the time to address this issue in policy we will see a huge difference.

ReplyDeleteGun control is a very big issue in America, and it is one that I am very undecided about. In the instance of any shootings, the majority of the time the criminal did not legally obtain the gun used in the violence. Because of this, I think criminals will be criminals and even making stricter gun laws, I think its possible that they will still find a way to illegally obtain the weapon. Also, I think that schools are commonly a target because people there are vulnerable because everyone knows schools are gun free zones and the people on campus won't be able to fight back on the same level.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do believe there should be extensive background checks for those who want to purchase a gun and there should be limits. I don't think just any one of age should be allowed to purchase a gun. Guns are very dangerous and especially in the wrong hands. I think there is a happy medium that needs to be reached in order to keep people safe without violating second amendment rights.
